JOURNEY | Video Game Piano Medley | Austin Wintory (arr. Tracy Wong)
Definitely trying new things here! I'm not normally a gamer but wow, is this particular video game stunning. The music in particular is a world in itself-- so much so that I had to arrange my favorite moments into a medley. Hope you enjoy my first attempt at green-screening (a lime green bedsheet literally taped to my walls), my first time recording myself playing a video game, and honestly, my first time arranging too (WHAT how did I manage to be a musician for 20+ years and avoid doing this??). The original soundtrack for Journey is by Austin Wintory (fellow USC Trojan!) and I used the piano reduction by Lauren Intravia as a base for the arrangement. Thanks for watching! xT •••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••• ABOUT LESSONS: Piano lessons are offered in-person at my Los Angeles studio or online so you can study from anywhere! PIAZZOLLA | Histoire du Tango, I. Bordel 1900 (music video) | Tracy Wong & Lindsey Wong
My little tribute towards the past year and the strange circumstances musicians are finding themselves in. This has probably been the longest time I've gone without playing music with others in person and there's nobody I miss more than my sister. Let's be honest, I'm no film-maker so this short video took wayyyy longer than it probably should have (like, I'm talking from June 2020 to March 2021) but where there's a will, there's a way. Two girls, a camera, a mic, and a ton of Zoom rehearsals later: I give you the "Piazzolla Project" - Stay tuned because we are definitely finishing out the set in the future with more music videos! Thank you as always for watching and supporting this baby channel! xT PS: I filmed a lot of this in HDR on my phone and I didn't know it would make the video turn out darker if you are watching on a device that doesn't support HDR because I'm a noob at filmography and all this equipment. I'm sorry about the darker image, if that's what you're seeing! •••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••• ABOUT LESSONS: Piano lessons are offered in-person at my Hollywood studio in Los Angeles or online so you can study from anywhere! DEBUSSY | Estampes, "Pagodes" | Tracy Wong
Definitely not a visual artist but I have such clear pictures in my head when I play Debussy so I thought I would share that along with the music. There are countless types of pagodas around the world. I ended up going with an Indonesian pagoda because of the gamelan influence on Debussy's music but I'm always curious to know what sort of pagoda comes to mind when people hear this piece. RANDOM FACTS ABOUT THE MUSIC: • "Estampes" translated from French means "prints" - I personally also think of stamps because of how the word sounds, even though that is wildly inaccurate. But it still makes a weird sort of sense in my head because the three pieces in this set depict scenes from different places in the world. When I was sketching, I was definitely thinking of an image you might find on a postage stamp. • Although many people label Debussy as an Impressionist, he pushed back against this and self-identified more as a Symbolist ("a late 19th century art movement of French, Russian, and Belgian origin in poetry and other arts seeking to represent absolute truths symbolically through metaphorical images and language mainly as a reaction against naturalism and realism" - thank you, Wikipedia) • Debussy was influenced by Indonesian gamelans in much of his music, which he heard for the first time in Paris. A gamelan is not a single instrument but ensembles with metallic percussion, string, and vocal elements. THE SACRED WOODS | Original Composition by Bradley Kirkendall | Tracy Wong
Big thanks to Bradley Kirkendall (composer) for both the dedication and the beautiful, beautiful music that is inspired by the equally meditative Burnet Woods in our shared hometown of Cincinnati. If you want to check out more of his music, please visit his website at: www.bradleykirkendall.com or his soundcloud: SoundCloud.com/bradley-kirkendall. This is pretty much the first time since my brief stint in junior high Power of the Pen that I've shared my writing. It's a little frightening, since it's such a vulnerable thing for me to share and I have very little practice with doing so, unlike music, but I hope it speaks to at least some people. I've put the full poems here as well. "On the Lakeside at Night" I have often wondered about the light / and how many say they feel known, seen, loved by day, by sun-- Radiant / But as for me, the contours of my deepest self unfurl like a cereus, most steady in the night "Warriors of Old" The call of battle, of Roman standards. Of heralds and heroes and heartbeats and history / Made obsolete by pre-packaged factions. By screens and distractions. / So instead, today, we call for justice. "The Old Fisherman" "Patience is a virtue," I'm told / But don't they realize: / That I would jump from a cliffside in a heartbeat, just to feel the wind on my face / That falling to fly-- that failing to fly-- is exactly the point? "Swings in the Valley" When did we lose the feeling of the apex? / Right at the top, you see? Where it all stretches out and you are still. / Neither rising nor falling. / I think that's why we swing / We seek still-ness through motion. "The Tree Beneath the Frozen Lake" What if I could take this moment and preserve it for all eternity. / What if this moment, where I am forever young, forever strong, forever in love / is The Best That Will Ever Be. / What if I could forget that underneath ice, water still churns. UKRAINIAN CAROL / CAROL OF THE BELLS | Arr. Jarrod Radnich | Tracy Wong
I recorded this video five months ago, not sure that I would continue with YouTube uploads but figuring hey, at least I'll have one video to put up for the holidays. But the lull in my itch to create that I keep expecting hasn't come and I honestly cannot wait to share all the projects I've been tending to with you in the upcoming year. I know this has been a difficult time for everybody and I hope December finds you and your loved ones safe and warm. I hope music and art has played a part in healing and joy. Thank you so much for watching and supporting! -T You can find the wonderful Jarrod Radnich's music for sale here: https://www.musicnotes.com/sheet-music/artist/jarrod-radnich?cmpid=sem_roirevolution&gclid=CjwKCAiAoOz-BRBdEiwAyuvA6zsjydf2LI7RtYoHnyUBX4GQAR4Kspj8NLKjqyx8MieinzRtqYDuehoCQfMQAvD_BwE ABOUT LESSONS WITH ME: Piano lessons are offered in-person at my Hollywood studio in Los Angeles or online so you can study from anywhere! DOMENICO SCARLATTI | Sonata in G Major K.547 | Tracy Wong
This was actually the first recording I made for this YouTube channel three months ago, spontaneously and after a long stretch of not being able to practice on a real piano due to the pandemic. I got the chance to play on my childhood piano during a visit home and Scarlatti just felt so good under my fingers, which were feeling severely out of shape. His music has always felt warm, joyful, and exuberant to me and I find myself gravitating towards the sonatas when I need to feel accepting of my own playing, rather than critical. RANDOM FACTS ABOUT THE MUSIC: • Scarlatti spent much of his professional life under the employ of Maria Barbara, who was later the Queen of Spain • This sonata is one of the 555 (!) keyboard sonatas Scarlatti composed • It is common practice to group multiple Scarlatti sonatas together, often by key or harmonic progression. One typical arrangement is to group a fast sonata (ex: allegro), slow sonata (ex: andante), and another fast sonata (ex: vivace) together for the effect of the movements of a traditional Classic Era "sonata" of your own making.
